Boston, Massachusetts: Top Places to Go To

Posted on November 23, 2010

Visit the patriot Paul Revere’s humble home in the North End, the very place where he started his famous ride.  Drop by the Old South Meeting House, the meeting place for revolutionary leaders John Hancock, James Otis and Samuel Adams.  This is the same house where protest meetings were held that eventually led to the American Revolution.  Visit the Old State House (now Museum of Boston History), Park Street Church and Granary Burial Ground as well while you’re in the downtown area.

Go north and you’ll reach the Government Center.  This is where you’ll find the JFK Federal building and City Hall.  You’ll also find Faneuil Hall here, a building that was built beginning in 1740.  It doubled as a public house and market.

For beer lovers, why not drop by the Samuel Adams Brewery?  Adams was a prominent figure in the American Revolution but he was also famous as a brew lover.  What better way to participate in a tour than to learn about both beermaking and history at the same time?  Tours are offered regularly.

The downtown area also offers a variety of museums for you to visit.  The Museum of Fine Arts, for example, houses priceless treasures from all over the world.  Collections include sculpture, decorative arts and paintings.  It also houses the largest Monet collection apart from that found in France.

Drop by Boston Harbor as well and try to book a boat or cruise so you can view the famous lighthouses in the area.  Most of them are not open for public visits, though.  However, you can catch a tour of Boston Light, which has been standing since 1793.

Parks and zoos
Boston is home to some of the most remarkable parks and zoos in the United States.  Franklin Park Zoo is a landmark in the area.  It covers 72 acres of land along Franklin Park Road and offers some of the best experiences for visitors, thanks to its history (it was founded in the early 1900s) and to the large variety of its animal residents.  Currently, there are over 200 animal species who call this zoo home.

One of its more impressive offerings is its gorilla exhibit where lowland gorillas are housed behind viewing stations made of glass.  If you’ve always wanted to meet these beautiful animals in person but never dared, this top spot in Boston will give you the chance you’ve been waiting for.

Although Boston has plenty of beautiful parks you can visit (the Common is known as the oldest park open to the public in the U.S.), no visit to the capital can ever be complete without dropping by Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.

Milwaukee Brewers Tickets For A Day At Miller Park

Posted on November 22, 2010

This professional baseball team was first established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1969. Their name was taken from the brewing industry that the city is still famous for today. At the start, the team began in Seattle, Washington and was known as the Seattle Pilots. The Pilots would only play one season before the team went bankrupt. The team was acquired by Bud Selig and sent to Milwaukee. From 1969 to 1997, the Brewers were an expansion team because the Milwaukee Braves had been a team in the city from 1953 to 1965.

With nicknames like The Crew, True Blue Brew Crew, Beermakers, and The Brew Crew, the Brewers have no World Series titles to their credit yet. In 1982, they won an American League Pennant. That same year, they also won the American League East Division title. In 2008, the Brewers won their only Wild card berth to date. This win came after a 26 year dry spell the team experienced after their appearance in the World Series. The team colors are navy, metallic gold and white; actually hand me downs from the days of being the Seattle Pilots. Many regard the early years in Milwaukee as a transitional time for the Brewers. From 1970 to 1977, memorable engagements include the trade that returned Hank Aaron to the Brewers and the introduction of Bernie Brewer, the team’s mascot.

The years that followed went down in history as the glory ones for the Brewers. In 1978, they won a total of 93 games and put a mark in the history books as it was the first time that a Milwaukee team made it to the pennant races in the National League since 1960. Gorman Thomas scored 45 home runs in 1979. Reggie Jackson and Ben Oglivie was league leaders in homers during 1980. In 2007, Prince Fielder jumped the bar with 50 homes runs; besting Thomas’ previous record of 45. The Brewers won an American League pennant in 1982 but with Rollie Fingers injured, the Brewers couldn’t overtake St. Louis and was defeated.

By 1984, the road was more like a rollercoaster for the Brewers than anything. Between 1984 and 1986, pitcher Juan Nieves pitched a no-hitter; the only one in the Brewers entire history to date. On a positive note, Paul Molitor had a 39 game hitting streak but for the most part, the years were plagued with lows and highs.

Located at One Brewers Way in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the current home of the Brewers; Miller Park. Serving as a replacement to Milwaukee County Stadium, Miller Park was constructed starting in 1996 and cost $400 million dollars to complete. Owned by the Brewers and the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball District, Miller Park opened on April 6, 2001. The playing surface is natural grass and the venue has been home to the Brewers since its opening. The Cleveland Indians occupied Miller Park for a spell in 2007 as did the Houston Astros in 2008.

Miller Park has exciting events like The Klement’s Sausage Race in the sixth inning and visits from the team mascot Bernie, who splashes into the Kalahari Splash Zone.

Best Beermaking Kit? – Coopers Brewery Micro Brewery Kit

Posted on November 22, 2010

I have spent many happy years on the trail of the perfect beer. There might not be any such thing, but I am willing to keep on trying. Experience has helped me to accept that the best beer is the one you have in front of you now.

Many years ago, when I first tried brewing my own, I admit to some less-than-desirable results. Some home brew even went down the drain, I am ashamed to confess. There is certainly no excuse for such behavior nowadays. This home brew can be as good as it gets.

It is easy to understand why this is the world’s best selling home beer making kit and it is easily my favorite of those I have tried. It is a quality product from a great Australian company, which makes it really easy to brew your own beer at home. Even the most inexperienced brewer can get it right first time and every time.

You can be confident buying this for yourself, or as a gift for husband or boyfriend. It could be a good idea for first year college students too, they will simple love it.

The whole kit comes in one box and it contains all you need, from bottles and caps to the basic ingredients. Just add water, for a refreshing taste of Australia.

In case you are a complete beginner, This fantastic kit will guide you into making excellent beer with minimal effort. The instruction manual and the DVD are very good and easy to follow. I really like the fact that you can read the instructions and get brewing right away. But do have the instructions handy so that you can keep checking up on the stages.

The DVD is great and very useful too. One important additional tip, is to give the product an extra few weeks after bottling. Even if you are desperate to taste your brew, it is worth waiting that little bit longer.

This particular kit will make approximately 6 gallons of beer and the whole process takes about 3 weeks as a minimum. The essential thing to keep in mind here at the beginning of the process is complete sterilization of the fermenter, jug and spoon. Once that is done you can combine the malt, water and yeast.

If your tap water is not really good, you could try boiling it first, then cool it before adding it to the mix. I sometimes buy bottled water at the supermarket, as my water is not good. Now sit back and await results. I usually mark up a calendar in the kitchen so that I know when the next stage is due. Then just leave it alone; you cannot hurry the process,so do be patient.

A friend of ours commented that even though his flat is very small, he has plenty of room to use this Micro Brewery kit. By the way, once you have mastered the brewer’s art with your first few brews, there are many variations you can experiment with, because refill kits are easily available. Making beer is a great hobby and then you can drink the product. What a wonderful world!

When I first started to brew my own, all those years ago, it was difficult if not impossible to make something to compare with beer available in the pub. That is just not true nowadays, so thank goodness for progress!
